Ludwig Mies van der Rohe comes under some of the big names of twienth century when it comes to design. He was not only an expert in designing furniture but also an influential architecture, a determined educatorand coineer of many aphorisms.
Even before taking on the role of Director of Architechture at the Bauhaus Design School with much influential aura, he was first an architect and had already been serving as the architectural director of the Werkbund where he had helped to found Der Ring architectural association.
All of these references indicate that Mies was among those who were fully appreciated in his lifetime type people.
Mies made headlines wherever he travelled. In the early 20th century, he introduced modernist architecture in Europe and after he moved to America in 1937, gave Frank Lloyd Wright a run for his money because of being titled as "America's Greatest Living Architect".
Apart from being a modernist architect, he was humble, influential, modest and created an aura that was unbeatable for the competitors to compete. He designed in such a way that his rational approaches in designing could be used later for the betterment for developing human societies where buildings could be constructed more compelling and breath taking, similar to the ones Mies created himself or even better. When his peers could not beat the scale of such high standards set by Mies, he would blame his methods of teaching rather than other factors that may contribute to the consequence.
There are many pithy aphorisms quoted by Mies himself which abridges his philosophical pursuits. Few of its examples are; “God is in the details”, and “Less is more”, and "clean, innately appealing designs".
Barcelona chair and the Brno chair are his most popular designs in furniture architect where his philosophical ideas can be tracked through which he took off the path in architecture career. Both of these masterpieces are created keeping the space around in mind. With their forms being defined in accordance to the space around, these chairs represent the perfect blend of opulent leather and sleek modernist steel.
It can be observed that Mies wanted to imprint his design style in his era presenting modern times, just like classical designs for classical era and gothic designs for gothic era. According to many, it can be argued that the modern style he presented in designing furniture rather seems timeless and lasting than being stuck in a specific era.
